Texas Crappie Fishing Gear Guide: Jigs, Minnows and Limits

Crappie are excellent eating and are often caught in big numbers around brush piles, bridges and docks on Texas reservoirs. Light, simple tackle is all you need.
Statewide crappie limits (2026-27)
- White and black crappie (and hybrids): 25 per day in any combination.
- 10-inch minimum length.
- Some waters have exceptions. Check before you keep fish.

The gear checklist
1. A light or ultralight spinning combo
A light rod (or a long jigging pole for dock and brush fishing) with 4–8 lb line lets you feel light bites and enjoy the fight.
2. Small jigs and jigheads
1/32 to 1/8 oz jigs with soft-plastic tubes or curly tails catch crappie year-round. Carry a few colors and match water clarity.
3. Live minnows, hooks and slip bobbers
A minnow under a slip bobber set to the depth of the fish is hard to beat, especially in winter. Use a bait bucket with an aerator.
4. Electronics (if you fish from a boat)
A fish finder helps you locate brush piles and suspended schools, which is the biggest key to consistent crappie catches.
5. Measuring board and fillet knife
With a 10-inch minimum, measure before you keep. A flexible fillet knife makes cleaning a limit quicker.
