Most Texas deer are taken from a box blind or a tower stand over a sendero, a food plot or a feeder, often at ranges under 200 yards. That shapes the gear list: comfort, quiet, good glass and a reliable way to get a deer out of the brush matter more than ultralight backcountry kit.

Rules worth knowing before you pack
- Statewide, no one may take more than five white-tailed deer per year, no more than three of them bucks (MLDP properties excepted). Many counties are lower.
- Bow hunting during the archery-only season requires an Archery Endorsement.
- Anyone born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 must complete Hunter Education (or buy a deferral and hunt accompanied). Carry proof, printed or in the TPWD app.
- Hunter orange is recommended but not required on private property in Texas. Public hunting lands have their own rules.
- Tag the deer immediately and complete the harvest log on your license. Some counties require mandatory harvest reporting within 24 hours.
The gear checklist
1. Binoculars
You will glass far more than you shoot. For blind hunting, an 8x or 10x binocular with a 42 mm objective is the common all-round choice because it gathers light well at dawn and dusk, when deer move most. Prioritize clear edges and comfortable eye relief over magnification.
2. Rangefinder
Senderos make distance hard to judge. A laser rangefinder lets you range landmarks (a feeder, a fence post, a cactus) before the hunt so you know your shot distances in advance. Bow hunters should look for an angle-compensated model for elevated stands.
3. Shooting rest or tripod
Blind windows and ground blinds are rarely the right height. A shooting stick, bipod or tripod steadies the shot and is one of the cheapest accuracy upgrades you can make.
4. Quiet, layered clothing
Texas November mornings can start near freezing and hit 80°F by afternoon, especially in South Texas. Bring a quiet outer layer, a packable insulating layer and a light base layer so you can strip down without leaving the blind.
5. Headlamp with a red or green mode
You will walk to and from the blind in the dark. A colored-light mode preserves night vision and is less alarming than a bright white beam.
6. Field-dressing kit
A sharp fixed-blade or replaceable-blade knife, gloves, a bone saw and game bags. Texas heat spoils meat quickly, so get the deer cooled fast.
7. Large cooler and ice
Early-season and South Texas hunts are warm. A large cooler lets you quarter and ice a deer at camp and get it to a processor without loss.
8. Deer cart or drag
Not every blind is next to a road. A drag strap or a wheeled game cart saves your back, especially when you hunt alone.
Quick tips
- Check wind direction before picking a blind. Deer usually approach from downwind.
- Sight in at the distances your blind actually offers, then confirm zero after travel.
- Know the antler restriction rules for your county. Many Texas counties limit which bucks are legal.
